A CALIFORNIA girl made a Gisborne girl’s dream come true this week, after seven-year-old Jasmyn Broughton won an online competition to meet Katy Perry.
The Mangapapa School pupil entered several competitions to meet the American singer after her aunt gave her five tickets to her Wellington concert for Christmas.
On Tuesday night, before Katy Perry’s concert at the TSB Arena, Jasmyn was ushered in to the Candyfornia tent — full of jars of lollies.
Jasmyn said it was like “lolly-land”.
“There were jelly beans and all sorts of lollies. Katy looked tall. She had very black hair and she was wearing her high heels,” she said.
Katy Perry showed Jasmyn around the tent, eating lollies as they went, and accepted a giftbag from her containing handmade headbands with Maori korus, and bags of Jaffas and pineapple lumps and handmade cards from her and younger sister Tayla.
The singer, who is married to British comedian Russell Brand, sat with Jasmyn, read the cards, ate Jaffas and said she wanted to wear one of the headbands because she really loved it.
Jasmyn, whose favourite song of Katy Perry’s is ET, said they had a nice conversation.
“She said, ‘you’re a cutie’. I said, ‘thank you for signing my T-shirt and having a photo with me’.”
Tight security meant mum Hollie Moloney was not allowed to accompany her daughter at first, until Katy Perry motioned her over.
“She was very genuine. She took a lot of time and was just willing to stand there with us. She also read Tayla’s card and asked all about her, because Tayla was a bit upset that she couldn’t meet her.”
Katy signed Jasmyn’s T-shirt with, “You’re so pretty”, her Mum’s ticket with “Supermum” and a T-shirt for Tayla that said “love and kisses”.
Jasmyn’s aunty Shannon Moloney went too and said the concert was amazing.
“It was so much fun. The arena smelled like candyfloss, fireworks started exploding to her song Firework, bubbles and beachballs started bouncing around the crowd to California Girls . . . . She was so eloquent and like a tall, perfect Barbie straight out of the box. Best experience of my life.”
