Katy Perry: I Broke Down in Tears Over Russell Brand During Tour

Big girls do cry — just ask Katy Perry.

The past two years have been the best and worst for the 27-year-old pop superstar, who stuck to a ton of professional commitments as her brief marriage to Russell Brand famously disintegrated.

In a new cover story for The Hollywood Reporter, the “Wide Awake” singer admits that she frequently fell apart over Brand, 35, in the midst of her California Dreams tour. (After just 14 months of marriage, the British comic star filed for divorce in late December of last year, and they finalized the split amicably in early 2012.)

“There were times when what was going on in my personal life was so overwhelming that I had to bend over to let those tears fall straight out of my eyes and not my false lashes just as I’m about to go up on that ramp and sing ‘Teenage Dream’,” admits Perry, now promoting her concert documentary Katy Perry: Part of Me 3D, out this summer.

Although the marriage and divorce are addressed in the pic, Perry cautions that fans shouldn’t expect a full explanation.

“Nobody knows what really happened except the two people who are in it,” Perry says, adding that she wanted to treat the very personal subject with “class and truth” for the film.

In happier news, the chart-topping star seems to have moved on with a hot new guy: Robert Ackroyd, the hunky guitarist from Florence + The Machine, with whom she’s been spotted over the past couple months.

Behind the Scenes of THR’s Katy Perry Cover Shoot (Video)

Speaking to THR.com from the set of her Hollywood Reporter cover shoot at Siren Studios in Los Angeles, Katy Perry reveals the inspiration for her concert-documentary Katy Perry: Part of Me (opening July 5). “I felt there was a big wave coming,” says the 27-year-old pop superstar. “And I wanted to remember that wave and show it to everyone from my point of view. … I didn’t edit out all the times I looked bad — I thought it was important to document the highs and the lows.”

Katy Perry: Pop’s Candy-Colored Princess Gets Serious (Photos)

The “Teenage Dream” singer, who will put her story out to the world in Paramount’s “Katy Perry: Part of Me” (out July 5), sits for THR photographer Joe Pugliese on May 21 at Siren Studios in Hollywood.

Russell Brand? Years of rejection? Yep, the purple-haired sexpot spills tears and secrets in her concert film Part of Me, as the one time religious teen from Santa Barbara breaks Michael Jackson’s chart record, racks up $44 million in one year alone and one-ups even studio execs with her power (don’t let those candy hearts fool you).

All Work With Some Play
“It’s not like I won the lottery or was born into a lot of money or had connections. I really hustled my way here,” says Perry, who was photographed May 21 at Siren Studios in Hollywood.

California Dreams
According to Billboard BoxScore, Perry’s California Dreams tour ranks in the top 15 of the most profitable treks of 2011, ahead of Lil Wayne and just behind The Eagles.

Record Breaking
Among the other eyebrow-raising achievements of her short but incredibly fruitful career: breakingMichael Jackson’s record for number of chart-topping singles from one album (his Bad had five), eight Grammy nominations, a stupefying 74.6 million tracks and 9.1 million full-lengths sold, more than 1 billion YouTube views, a successful line of perfumes (Meow and Purr), her line of Eylure false eyelashes, endorsements for ProActiv and OPI nail polish and, now, her second entree into the movies, following the role of Smurfette that Perry voiced for the 2011 animated flick The Smurfs.

THR Cover: Katy Perry on Russell Brand, the Media and Conversations With God: ‘I Still Believe’

In the new issue of The Hollywood Reporter, the chart-topping, record-breaking pop star discusses showing the demise of her marriage to the British actor in new concert-doc “Part of Me” (opening July 5), why the press has it out for her preacher parents and the next venture on her to-do list: her own label.

If resumés could talk, Katy Perry’s would be screaming, “Take a break, woman!” But that word — “break” — has no place in the 27-year-old pop star’s vocabulary, unless it involves breaking records, which she’s done plenty of in the last two years. That’s when Teenage Dream, her delectable second album, saw more hit songs top the Billboard charts than any artist sinceMichael Jackson in the Bad era. At the same time, Perry launched a grueling 124-date world tour and filmed every minute of the highly technical production, including backstage moments with her then husband, comedian-turned-movie star Russell Brand, for her own concert-umentary Katy Perry: Part of Me (opening July 5).

On stage, her two-hour California Dreams show was a spectacle dazzled with cupcakes, confetti and Candyland themes, but behind the scenes, Perry tells The Hollywood Reporter in a newcover story, “There were times when what was going on in my personal life was so overwhelming that I had to bend over to let those tears fall straight out of my eyes and not my false lashes just as I’m about to go up on that ramp and sing ‘Teenage Dream.’”

Fans will be able to see this key scene and experience many more onstage moments in 3D, and like Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never, there’s an underlying message of faith — along with confidence, resilience, tenacity and humility — to Perry’s place in the world. But unlike the “Boyfriend” singer, Perry, who was raised by born-again  traveling ministers in an ultrareligious home, proudly boasts, “I’m no poster child for Christianity.”

Part of Me aims to show the real Perry, rather than the Barbie doll most choose to see: someone who struggled and hustled, who battled record company executives that thought they knew better (and her parents, who were sure of it), who had her heart broken in a million pieces, yet still declares, “I believe in love!” Much like her fans, who start as young as four, believe in the wide-eyed dreams of a (sometimes bad) girl gone — and stayed — good.

Some of the other details from THR’s cover story:

WHEN IT CAME TO HER RELATIONSHIP WITH RUSSELL BRAND, PERRY STRUGGLED WITH HOW TO PRESENT THE DEMISE OF THEIR MARRIAGE ON THE BIG SCREEN

Class and truth were Perry’s thoughts when it came to her depiction of a whirlwind romance gone wrong. “Like how I write my songs, honesty has always worked for me,” she says. “So if it ain’t broke, why f—ing fix it?“ As for the incessant invasiveness of blogs and the celebrity press, Perry adds that, like Kim Kardashian’s ill-fated 72-day marriage to NBA up-and-comer Kris Humphries, “Nobody knows what really happened except the two people who are in it.”

THE PRESS “TRIED TO DESTROY MY PARENTS”

Responding to the media firestorm over alleged anti-semitic comments Perry’s father Keith Hudson made to an Ohio church congregation, the former Christian music artist insists the remarks “were taken completely out of context.” As for how Perry is fighting back? “There’s not a whole lot you can do,” she says. “You hope that it passes, which it always does, but they have to be careful. They didn’t necessarily sign up for this.”

PERRY SPENT MILLIONS OF HER OWN MONEY TO FINANCE PART OF ME

“Trust me, I have a vision.” That’s been Katy Perry’s creative mantra since the beginning, but in the case of a theatrically-released film, she had to bet on herself with cold hard cash: $2 million to be exact, with the rest of the movie’s budget loaned to Perry by production partners AEG Live (the company counts Staples Center as one of their flagship venues). “My frugal business manager, God bless him, was sweating,” she says. Good thing Perry earned some $44 million last year, according to one report.

LIKE JUSTIN BIEBER’S BLOCKBUSTER NEVER SAY NEVER, PARAMOUNT IS BETTING ON A BELIEBER-SIZED TURNOUT FOR PART OF ME

Magical Elves executive producer and Part of Me co-director Jane Lipsitz expects Perry to top Bieber’s $30 million opening because the singer “has a larger international following.” Perry also has those many millions of awestruck girl fans, age four and up, who hang on her every word, even when they’re not old enough to understand them.

NEXT ON PERRY’S TO-DO LIST: HER OWN RECORD LABEL

Perhaps in an effort to pay back (metaphorically speaking) whose who extended a hand to a struggling artist like her former self, Perry will soon undertake another venture: label-head. The as-yet-unnamed imprint is in the works, she reveals. Says Perry: “When it does come to fruition, I’m going to try and avoid the things that take away any fighting chance for an artist to have financial success.” No doubt she would know.

Katy Perry to Launch Her Own Record Label (Exclusive)

The pop princess tells THR that she’s in the process of starting her own as-yet-unnamed imprint.

Katy Perry is looking to follow in the footsteps of such recording artists as Madonna and Prince by launching her own record label.

In The Hollywood Reporter’s cover story, the pop princess reveals that she’s in the process of starting her own as-yet-unnamed imprint.

“I’m preparing for it now,” she reveals. “And when this record label does come to fruition, I’m going to try and avoid the things that take away any fighting chance for an artist to have financial success. As people are coming to me with opportunities, I’m thinking, ‘How would I want to be treated?’ ”

Perry — who has been with EMI’s Capitol Records since 2007 — has had 11 top 10 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and has sold 9.1 million albums so far.

She also has appeared in an episode of How I Met Your Mother and voiced Smurfette in the feature filmThe Smurfs. She next hits theaters July 5 with the 3D movie Katy Perry: Part of Me.

Kenny Chesney and Katy Perry to Spend July Fourth Together

The best of country music and the best of pop music will join forces this July Fourth!

Kenny Chesney and Katy Perry will both be a part of this year’s Macy’s 4th of July fireworks show. This show celebrates the birth of our nation and is televised every year.

The Macy’s 4th of July fireworks is the nation’s largest fireworks display and lights up New York City over the Hudson River. This year’s celebration, the 236th birthday, will illuminate more than 45,000 fireworks during a 25-minute “ignite the night”-themed display.

Senior Vice President of NBC Entertainment’s Special Program, Doug Vaughan said in a statement:

“NBC is thrilled to have Katy Perry and Kenny Chesney join us in celebrating America’s birthday. These stars’ powerful voice and stage presence will serve as the perfect complement to Macy’s visual artistry.”

Chesney will be taking a break from his Brothers of the Sun tour with Tim McGraw to be a part of the celebration. He will resume shows on July 7 in Chicago.

Katy Perry On ‘Wide Awake’: “I Wanted To Tell A Story About Myself”

Katy Perry is spilling the details on the inspiration behind her latest single, “Wide Awake.” The track marks the end of her Teenage Dream era, and will appear in her upcoming movie Katy Perry: Part of Me.

The singer recently told MTV News, “it’s kind of the perfect last word of me at this moment.”

Perry originally penned “Wide Awake” as the end-title song for the film, which hits theaters on July 5.

“It was a song that I hadn’t written for Teenage Dream,” Perry said in the interview. “I was doing this movie and they asked me if I wanted to write an end-title song for the movie and I was like, ‘I know exactly what I want to say.’ I was really kind of dying to write another song at that point.”

Perry added that she did not want to wait for her next album to release new music so “Wide Awake” was included on the re-release of her last album.

A music video for the song premieres tomorrow night on MTV at 7:53 p.m. ET, and, according to Perry, reflects the ups and downs of her life and career over the past year.

“I just wanted to tell a story about myself going through this journey, maybe sometimes trying to get out of the maze. I think what probably kept me going is just the purity of my belief in music.”

Most recently, Perry tore up the stage at Canada’s MuchMusic Video Awards on Sunday night, giving fans a taste of what to expect in her movie, which features live performances, as well as behind-the-scenes footage. She also took home the UR Fave: International Artist award and the International Video of the Year award for “Last Friday Night.”
